AI Laptops Are Here — Is Your Old Laptop Now Worth Less? (2026)

We checked the resale data. The answer might surprise you.

Published: March 28, 2026

Every laptop manufacturer is screaming "AI PC" in 2026. Apple's M4 chip has a 16-core Neural Engine. Intel's Core Ultra has a dedicated NPU. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite runs Copilot locally. The marketing makes it sound like every laptop without AI is a paperweight.

But is that actually true? We looked at real resale data to see whether the AI laptop wave has actually tanked the value of older machines — or whether it is mostly hype.

MacBook Depreciation: M1 Through M4

Apple Silicon has had the most dramatic generational leaps. Here is how each chip generation has held up in resale.

Model Launch Price Used Price (2026) Retention

Used prices for 8GB/256GB base configs in good condition with charger. March 2026 data.

Windows AI PCs: Has the NPU Changed Anything?

Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake) and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite both include dedicated NPUs for local AI tasks. Microsoft has pushed Copilot+ PC branding hard. But here is the reality:

Apps that actually use the NPU in 2026: Windows Copilot (search, summarize), Adobe Photoshop (generative fill), DaVinci Resolve (noise reduction), a handful of video call background blur features. That is essentially it.
Apps that do NOT need NPU: Chrome, Office, VS Code, Spotify, Zoom, gaming, everything 99% of people use daily. These run identically on a 2022 laptop with a decent CPU.

The result? Windows AI PCs have not significantly depressed the resale value of older non-AI laptops. A 2022 ThinkPad X1 Carbon with an i7-1260P sells for roughly the same price it would have without the AI PC launch.

What Actually Affects Laptop Resale Value

AI branding is not the main driver. Here is what actually moves the needle:

1
Brand — Apple holds 60-70% after 3 years. ThinkPad/XPS hold 40-50%. Acer/HP budget hold 25-35%.
2
RAM and Storage — 16GB/512GB configs hold value significantly better than 8GB/256GB. Buyers know 8GB is tight in 2026.
3
Battery Health — A laptop with 80%+ battery capacity is worth ₹3,000-5,000 more than one with a worn battery. Cycle count matters.
4
Display Quality — Retina/OLED/high-res displays hold value. 768p TN panels kill resale instantly.

The Exception: Budget Laptops Are in Trouble

Here is where AI does matter. Budget laptops (under ₹40,000) with older Intel i3/i5 or AMD Ryzen 3 chips, 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage are getting squeezed from both sides:

  • New AI PCs at ₹45,000-55,000 make them look obsolete in spec sheets
  • Chromebooks and tablets eat into the low end for basic use cases
  • 8GB RAM is no longer considered "enough" — buyers skip these listings

If you have a budget laptop from 2021-2022, sell it now. Waiting another year will cost you ₹3,000-5,000 in depreciation with no upside. These machines are heading toward ₹8,000-12,000 resale territory.

Our Take

Non-AI laptops still hold value IF they have good specs. A MacBook M2, ThinkPad X1, or Dell XPS with 16GB RAM is not suddenly worth less because the M4 has a Neural Engine. The specs that matter — RAM, storage, display, build quality — have not changed.

But budget laptops without AI will drop faster. And by 2027-2028, when more apps genuinely require NPU support, the gap will widen. If you are sitting on an aging laptop, the best time to sell was yesterday. The second best time is today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI laptops make older laptops less valuable?

Not significantly — yet. In 2026, the resale impact of the NPU is minimal because very few consumer apps actually require on-device AI. A 2022 MacBook M2 or ThinkPad with a strong CPU/GPU still holds solid resale value. Budget laptops without AI features may see faster depreciation as AI becomes a marketing checkbox.

How much has the MacBook M1 depreciated since the M4 launch?

The MacBook Air M1 (2020) has gone from a launch price of ₹99,900 to a used price of ₹38,000-42,000 in March 2026 — a 58-62% drop over 5.5 years. However, much of that drop happened gradually. The M4 launch itself only caused a 5-8% additional dip in M1 prices.

Which laptops hold resale value the best?

Apple MacBooks consistently hold the best resale value among laptops, retaining 55-65% after 3 years. ThinkPad X1 Carbon and Dell XPS 13/15 are the best among Windows laptops, retaining 40-50%. Gaming laptops depreciate fastest at 35-45% retention after 3 years.

Should I sell my non-AI laptop now before it loses more value?

If your laptop is from 2020-2022 and still in good condition, selling now is smart — not because of AI specifically, but because laptops depreciate steadily every year. Waiting 12 more months typically costs you ₹3,000-8,000 in lost resale value. The AI factor will become more significant in 2027-2028 as apps start requiring NPU support.
