The Bids44 India Resale Value Index (2026)
How well used goods hold their value in India, by category
Last updated: June 2026 · Calibrated across 466 products
In India, cars and motorcycles hold their resale value best, and TVs hold it worst. A typical car retains about 42% of its original price after 5 years and a motorcycle about 38%, while a television keeps just 15%. The Bids44 India Resale Value Index measures how every major second-hand category depreciates over 1, 3 and 5 years, so you know what your used item is really worth before you sell.
Resale value retention by category
Categories ranked by how much of their original price they keep after 5 years of typical Indian ownership.
| # | Category | After 1 yr | After 3 yrs | After 5 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cars | 85% | 60% | 42% |
| 2 | Motorcycles | 82% | 56% | 38% |
| 3 | Furniture | 78% | 50% | 36% |
| 4 | Laptops | 75% | 45% | 28% |
| 5 | Appliances | 72% | 42% | 25% |
| 6 | Phones | 72% | 38% | 20% |
| 7 | TVs | 65% | 32% | 15% |
What loses value fastest in the first year
First-year depreciation is the steepest part of the curve. TVs lose the most — about 35% in 12 months — while cars lose the least (15%). This is why one-year-old electronics are often the best value buys.
| Category | Value lost in year 1 |
|---|---|
| TVs | −35% |
| Appliances | −28% |
| Phones | −28% |
| Laptops | −25% |
| Furniture | −22% |
| Motorcycles | −18% |
| Cars | −15% |
Why some categories hold value better in India
Three India-specific forces drive resale value: service-network depth (a Maruti or Royal Enfield can be serviced in any town, so buyers trust it), spare-part availability and running cost, and brand demand on the used market. Cars and motorcycles score high on all three. Electronics depreciate faster because new models launch yearly and warranty value evaporates — a TV's panel technology can feel dated within two refresh cycles.
Best value-holders in each category
- Cars — Toyota Innova Crysta (75–80%)
- Motorcycles — Royal Enfield Classic 350 (50–55%)
- Furniture — Solid-wood beds & sofas
- Laptops — Apple MacBook Air M1 (40–45%)
- Appliances — Inverter ACs & front-load washers
- Phones — iPhone 15 Pro Max (30–35%)
- TVs — OLED panels from Sony/LG
Methodology
The Index is built from Price Check by Bids44's category depreciation model, calibrated on Indian resale-market data (used-car, phone and laptop platforms plus dealer insights) across 466 product guides. Figures are typical ranges for average condition and usage; individual models vary — premium and cult brands (Toyota, Royal Enfield, Apple) outperform their category, while niche or fast-refreshing products underperform.
