There are two ways to buy a used bike online in India. Certified programmes from the brands inspect the bike and give you a warranty or return window. Direct from owner apps are cheaper — no dealer margin — but the checks and paperwork are on you. Pick based on how much risk you want to carry.

Second hand bike documents & RC transfer

• RC (registration certificate) — the chassis and engine numbers on it must match the bike.
• Form 29 (seller) and Form 30 (buyer + seller) for the transfer. Apply on Parivahan's "Transfer of Ownership" service within 14 days (same state) or 45 days (moving to another state, with a Form 28 NOC).
• Loan check — look the number up on VAHAN ("Know Your Vehicle Details") or mParivahan. If there was a loan, insist on the bank's NOC and Form 35.
• Insurance — apply to the insurer within 14 days of buying to move the policy to your name.
• PUC — a valid pollution certificate is required.
• Fees — the transfer fee is half the registration fee plus state charges; usually a few hundred rupees for a two-wheeler.

• Start it cold — hard starting, blue or white smoke, or knocking are expensive signs.
• Take a test ride: brakes, clutch, gear shifts, wobble at speed.
• Look at the chain, sprockets, tyres and fork seals for leaks.
• Ask for service records and the second key.
• Compare the price with the model's fair range — e.g. Classic 350, Activa 6G.
